Most things that land on our bench in Al Quoz have a screen, a keyboard or a speaker. This one had a water tank.

In early October a customer brought in a Ninja HydraSense, a smart countertop water filter with a touchscreen, one-touch dispensing and a 3-litre reservoir. No plumbing, no installation: according to Ninja, you just plug it in and fill it. And that is exactly where the trouble started.

A very Dubai problem

This unit, model WF1001WH1, was built for the American market, where wall sockets give about 110–120 volts. Here in the UAE the mains is 220–240 volts. Plug a 110 V appliance straight into a Dubai socket and it gets roughly double the voltage it was designed for.

That’s what happened. The filter was plugged into 220 V and stopped working. When it came in, the worry was that the motor had burnt out.

We see this more than you’d think. Dubai is full of people who bring gadgets back from the US, order them online from American stores, or move here with a houseful of electronics. Many chargers are happy with anything from 100 to 240 V. Appliances with motors, pumps and heaters often aren’t.

What we found and what we did

Diagnosis showed two jobs. First, the device’s power system had to be swapped from 110 V to 220 V, so it can live in a UAE kitchen permanently without a step-down transformer on the counter. Second, the overvoltage had damaged components on the main board, and those had to be replaced.

Our technician handled both: the power system was converted to 220 V, and the damaged components on the motherboard were replaced. The filter came in on 3 October, was diagnosed and repaired by 5 October, and went home with its owner the same day.

Repair at a glance

  • Problem: plugged into 220 V mains, stopped working
  • Repair: power system converted from 110 V to 220 V; damaged components on the main board replaced
  • Turnaround: received 3 Oct 2026, collected 5 Oct 2026

If you brought something home from the US

Before you plug it in, check the label on the device or its power adapter. If it says something like “Input: 100–240 V”, you only need a plug adapter. If it says “120 V” or “110 V” only, don’t plug it into a UAE socket directly.

And if it’s too late and the thing has gone quiet, don’t throw it away. A lot of these appliances can be saved with board-level and component repair, and sometimes the power side can be converted so the problem never comes back.
